Corley Drugs Selects the Activant Eagle Retail Solution

Georgia-based independent pharmacy chain looks to improve its retail operations with the Activant Eagle POS and retail management system

LIVERMORE, CA, May 4, 2009 – Activant Solutions Inc., a leading provider of specialty retail business management solutions, today announced that Corley Drugs has selected the Activant Eagle® solution to be its business management and Point-of-Sale (POS) solution. An independent pharmacy chain with five retail locations and one closed-door pharmacy in LaGrange and Manchester, Ga., Corley Drugs recently chose the Activant Eagle solution to help improve its retail systems and business practices, including inventory management and customer transactions.

Founded in 1976, Corley Drugs prides itself on being both a full-service pharmacy and complete retail store – selling various items from health aids and vitamins to groceries and convenience items. In the past, the stores all used QS/1’s Pharmacy Management software and Point-of-Sale software to run the pharmacy and retail operations. While satisfied with the QS/1® pharmacy system for the management of its pharmacy operations, Corley Drugs made a strategic decision to put more emphasis on building its retail operations and recognized the need for a stronger retail solution. The Activant Eagle solution will replace the QS/1 system as the technology cornerstone for the front of the store, including point-of-sale, inventory control, accounting and other retail and store management functions. The Activant Eagle solution will interface to the QS/1 system for pharmacy point-of-sale transactions.

“It is getting so competitive in the pharmacy business that you have to do something to increase your out-front retail sales, and this is one of the main reasons we changed to Activant,” said David Cochran, co-owner of Corley Drugs. “The QS/1 system is a good pharmacy software solution, but it was not a strong POS and retail solution. We found basic tasks like changing and updating product prices to be difficult and arduous. When you are talking about the technology that is at the heart of your multi-store business, you don’t want to compromise. You want the best-of-breed solutions in the front and in the back of the store.”

Corley Drugs executives plan to leverage the Activant Eagle solution to help them fine-tune their inventory levels. In the past, all inventory decisions were made without the aid of a formal computer software system. “Until now, we have been making inventory decisions based on gut instinct,” continued Cochran. “Sometimes, we were dead on, but other times we were not. It will be nice to have a system that will advise us on what we should carry. We are very excited that the Eagle system has a sophisticated inventory management solution. We expect that it will save us a substantial amount of money.”

Inventory management at Corley Drugs is further complicated because carried merchandise must be managed across six locations. The Activant Eagle solution makes it easy to see inventory across multiple stores and move merchandise from store to store. If a product sells out at one store, the Activant Eagle solution will allow Corley Drugs managers to check to see if any of the other stores have the item in stock before placing an order for more. The software will also help Corley Drugs better prepare for its monthly sales.

As part of its Activant solution, Corley Drugs is installing the Activant Business Advisor™ analytics solution. This software will give Corley Drugs executives the ability to see company inventory and margin numbers in real-time. For more detailed information, they can click on the amounts in question to drill down to see the data that generates the figures, providing an essential dashboard for managing retail operations.

“With the recent changes in the market, independent pharmacies are seeing their profits getting squeezed tighter and tighter. Where do you compete? How can you best impact your bottom line? The answer lies in the front of the store… in the retail side of the business,” said Scott Hanson, senior vice president for Activant Solutions. “We are seeing more and more pharmacies, like Corley Drugs, look to enhance visibility and improve efficiencies in their retail operations to lower inventory costs and improve profits. To compete with the large chains, independent pharmacies must fully utilize all of the tools at their disposal.”

Activant’s installation at Corley Drugs, including the interface to the QS/1 system, is planned for mid-year 2009..
